Heart Practice

What does a body say when it is left to move with complete freedom?

When it can focus on feeling and on what needs to be expressed? When there is no organized choreography, no plan, and no regard for how the movement appears to a viewer? When the focus is on the physical feeling and letting the body explore the forms it can make?

This project addresses a long-standing personal struggle with not feeling connected to my body and not feeling like I could openly express myself. I wanted to improve my graphic design and research creation skills by incorporating this personal desire for openness and growth into a book. For a while I have been interested in how to read a body, be that through words we can associate with body feelings and movements, or through wordless expression and how we can interpret that. I have wanted to translate fluid movements that can only be viewed live or in video into graphic devices for print. It took a lot of reflection and synthesizing thoughts to get to where it ended up.
